Three centuries ago the Russian Empire exported iron from the Ural Mountains manufactured at its Nizhny Tagil plant to destinations across Europe. When production finally came to a halt in the 1990s, the natural environment slowly began to reclaim this monumental industrial site. No longer a manufacturing powerhouse, today, the old Demidov Steelworks has become a museum of industry as well as ecology, where visitors can marvel at “technology as a form of art” while learning about the region’s industrial and natural heritage. Built on a mountain of iron, the Nizhny Tagil Eco-Industrial Park has become a magnet for tourists, attracting thousands of visitors each year. Water, Fire, and the Trumpet of Fame examines the architectural, industrial, cultural, and ecological significance of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
