Kinstugi is an unusual artform that involves repairing broken ceramic objects with gold dust. While its origins can be found in 15th-century Japan, it was later introduced to China, where it came to occupy an important place in Chinese culture. Sevinç Aydoğan, a film student from Ankara, was introduced to the art of kintsugi during a brief visit to China. The repairs involve a painstaking process, but according to Aydoğan, it ends with an object achieving its true nature; after all, she says, “no two objects break in the same way.” Through Aydoğan’s camera, we are able to observe the Kintsugi artist Deng Bin as he patiently demonstrates the process of making repairs and reflects on the philosophy behind an artform that transforms imperfections into beauty.
