Porunai
Directed by Pradeep Kumar & Elango Sampathkumar
India | 2025 | 87'
Tamil (Turkish subtitles)

The river Thamirabarani is the only perennial river to flow through Tamil Nadu, the southernmost state in India. Recent excavations have revealed the Thamirabarani, known in ancient times as Porunai, to be the site of one of the earliest Iron Age civilizations in the world. Porunai is a feature-length documentary film that explores the deep civilizational history of the river and the surrounding region. The documentary filmmakers lived for nearly a year at active excavation sites in the region, working closely with archaeologists as material evidence—pottery, iron tools, burial practices, and settlement patterns—emerged from the soil. These new findings challenge established timelines of South Asian history and invite a reassessment of how early human societies developed technological and cultural complexity. Cinematically, Porunai blends rigorous research with an epic historical sensibility, allowing the river and landscape to function as living witnesses to time. The film reflects on history as a continuum—shaped not only by written records, but by voices and civilizations long buried, waiting to be heard again.
